Equine Health, Safety, and Welfare Professor
Location: Lexington, KY
Position:Equine Health, Safety, and Welfare Professor (tenured) and Research Director for the Department of Veterinary Science. Regular Title Faculty Series (12-month) with anticipated effort focused on Research (50–60%), Administration (30–40%), Instruction (10%), Service (5%).
Description:As a faculty member in the Department of Veterinary Science, our colleague will bring research and instructional expertise that is compatible with, and expands the capabilities of, faculty in the Gluck Equine Research Center and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory with expectations to:
• Establish a research program that contributes to current efforts addressing equine health, safety, and welfare with preference for investigators focused on the equine musculoskeletal system.
• Participate with faculty in the department, college, and university in developing and promoting a dynamic and productive interdisciplinary group between the Department of Veterinary Science and programs in other departments on campus.
• Apply for and obtain extramural research support both as a Principal Investigator and in collaboration with others.
• Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present this information at appropriate local, regional, national, and international meetings.
• Seek appointment to the Graduate Faculty and participate in the guidance and training of graduate students, post-doctoral scholars/fellows, visiting scholars in the department.
• Serve on standing and/or ad hoc department, college, or university committees.
The Research Director for the Department of Veterinary Science works closely with and reports administratively to the department chair. The research director works productively with the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation Board, college administration, and philanthropy office to increase the corpus of the Gluck Foundation’s Equine Research General Endowment and direct programmatic investment of the income from the endowment. The research director will provide leadership to ensure the continued success of the philanthropic program and is expected to sustain highly visible and exceptionally cooperative relationships with all sectors of the large and growing equine interests. Global relationships are an integral part of the Kentucky equine industry, and candidates with international experience are highly desirable. Our colleague will help all investigators obtain funds, to write grants if asked, and to share information they have on new sources of funding from either government agencies, foundations, and/or individual interested donors with all faculty. The faculty member appointed is expected to have 30–40% administrative effort along with the title of Research Director for the Department of Veterinary Science with responsibility to:
• Work collaboratively with all faculty from Veterinary Science, other college departments, and other colleges at UK and beyond, to elevate the research presence serving the equine industry and help increase competitiveness in the peer-reviewed research environment.
• Promote and advocate for Gluck Center and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory research programs to synergistically enhance the preeminent institutional reputation for equine health, safety, and welfare.
• Develop and implement a communications and public relations plan for the Gluck Center in coordination with the veterinary science department chair, equine outreach veterinarian, the college’s director of marketing and strategic communications, senior director of philanthropy & alumni, and the UK Ag Equine Programs Director.
• Serve as a contact for global equine industry leaders in order to better understand and anticipate industry needs and to identify opportunities for advancing mutual interests. • Increase departmental research funding portfolios through external grants, contracts, gifts, and endowments.
• Lead collaboratively with other faculty in the department, college and university and/or at other institutions of higher learning to enhance the Gluck Center’s interdisciplinary and comprehensive equine research program.
• Provide leadership for operations of the Gluck Foundation and its Board of Directors.
• Review and advise on research infrastructure and facilities necessary for a best-in-class research program.
Qualifications: Ph.D. (or equivalent) and an indisputable record of accomplishment through publications, student success, and extramural funding in the field relevant to equine health, safety, and welfare. A D.V.M. degree (or equivalent) with internationally recognized board certification in a relevant discipline is highly desired. Must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure at the University of Kentucky.
