Clinical Professor of Veterinary Science
Location: Lexington, KY
The Department of Veterinary Science – Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center – invites applications for an open rank in the Clinical Title series (non-tenure eligible) 12-month appointment faculty position. The anticipated Distribution of Effort (DOE) is 70% clinical service to department and college on health care and maintenance of all aspects of the college’s equine research and teaching herds, 5% research for collaborative research, 20% instruction related to patient care, continuing education, instructional supervision/advising and/or offering courses, 5% general service as part of the faculty appointment. This effort distribution is reviewed on an annual basis and may change related to the needs of the unit. Anticipated start date October 1, 2024.
As a faculty member, we look for collaboration on both new and existing teaching and research initiatives. These efforts could include contributing to our academic agreements with Lincoln Memorial University, as well as supporting courses, facilitating clinical experiential learning opportunities, and by helping to develop career exploration programs for students at college, high school, and 4-H levels, who are interested in veterinary medicine. These activities will be in collaboration and coordination with the Director of UK Ag Equine Programs and the college’s pre-veterinary medicine career advisor.
As a college, we have more than 300 horses across the various teaching and research herds and these herds are expected to grow as we bring on new faculty. Therefore, there is a need to expand our medical coverage to oversee primary health care and maintenance of all aspects of college’s equine research and teaching herds. As part of this role, our new colleague will coordinate and participate in providing primary veterinary care, both routine and emergency, for these horses. Care for patients whose conditions require specialized expertise or that are not treatable in the field may be referred to other veterinarians or regional equine hospitals, as appropriate.
Our new colleague will collaborate with the department’s liaison to the University’s IACUC and Office of the Attending Veterinarian. This faculty member will work closely with Associate Dean for Research Office and likely collaborate with additional academic units in the college.
The mission of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center is to conduct research on diseases that affect the health and welfare of the horse, which are consistent with the needs of the local, national, and international horse industry. This position focuses on general equine health, while across the Gluck Center there is additional expertise in equine infectious diseases, reproduction, the musculoskeletal system, parasitology, toxicology, genetics, and diagnostic testing.
This colleague will be expected to collaborate with other faculty in the department and elsewhere related to equine health. As a member of the Graduate Faculty of the University, the appointee will be expected to participate in the education and mentoring of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars/fellows. This faculty member will also be expected to participate in teaching/advising of undergraduates as part of the teaching mission of the Department of Veterinary Science. Finally, this appointee will be expected to engage in service activities benefiting the Department, College, University, and external stakeholders.
DVM (or international equivalent), with licensure from the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners to practice in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or ability to obtain licensure, is required. Residency and/or recognition by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Equine Specialty) is desired as is instructional experience in didactic and/or clinical settings. Previous faculty experience is highly desirable.
