Location: Lexington, KY

The Department of Horticulture is looking for an enthusiastic individual with management skills and experience conducting research broadly related to the gut microbiome. The candidate will oversee the day-to-day operations in the laboratory (e.g., ordering, preparation of reagents) and ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures. In addition, the candidate will be expected to conduct research, analyze data, and contribute to publications/written reports. Lab based activities will include operating in vitro colon model systems, performing nucleic acid extractions, preparation of libraries for sequencing, isolation/characterization of microorganisms, data analysis and other routine benchwork tasks. The post holder will also assist with training students, staff, and visitors to the laboratory, liaising with collaborators as appropriate, and be a positive team player.
 

The ideal candidate will have prior experience with project management, the development of bioethics applications, managing donor databases (related to samples, donors, and data), and/or acting as an honest broker. Applicants must be reliable, respectful and possess good communication skills. The operation, upkeep and maintenance of specialized equipment will be overseen by the Scientist I (biosafety cabinet, anaerobic chambers, gas monitoring system, etc.). This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
