The Department of Horticulture (Home | Department of Horticulture) seeks to fill a 12-month, full time Horticulturist position. The successful candidate should possess strong self-motivation, a passion for students and horticulture education, and expertise in cultivating and propagating many types of plants. This position will work closely with students, faculty, and staff of the Horticulture department and others within the interdisciplinary environment of the University, College, and Cooperative Extension Service.

The candidate will be the curator and primary manager of the Horticulture teaching greenhouse facilities and will care for the greenhouse and outdoor teaching plant collections to maintain quality of displays and collections. The use of teaching greenhouses and facilities from other departments will also be overseen by the candidate. The staff horticulturist will work closely with the undergraduate Horticulture Club (UK Horticulture Club) as an advisor to the club and supervisor of club plant production and retail activities. The successful candidate will regularly work with students and faculty co-advisors to contribute to the strategic planning of the Horticulture Club and will serve as the primary supervisor for the annual summer Horticulture Club intern.

The staff horticulturist will also have responsibility as assigned in assisting faculty with preparation of horticulture lab materials, including floral design classes, plant identification classes, and plant propagation or other classes requiring plant material or access to the teaching greenhouse. Depending on the candidate’s interest and area of expertise, they may also help instruct course laboratories under the direction of the course instructor of record. The candidate may also assist faculty supervisor and other Horticulture faculty in short-term task projects as needed, such as growing plants for special topics courses. This position will also collaborate with faculty and staff to increase visibility of the Horticulture Department and program in the wider University and local community, and may contribute to strategic planning for undergraduate recruitment activities.
